Description

There are several different kinds of damage that may impact phones, and one of the single most common here is water damage. Especially for older phones that had no water resistance features whatsoever, but even for newer ones as well, many of us have been in a situation where we dropped a phone in water, spilled moisture on a phone or something similar.

At PC Laptops, we’re here to help if this happens to you. Our phone repair services, which cover both iPhone repair and Android repair, regularly assist clients who are dealing with water damage to the interior components of their phone. In addition, we’re happy to provide tips and expertise on how to avoid water damage issues reaching this point to begin with – in some cases, minor water exposure can be handled easily by the phone owner without any repair need. Here are some basic steps to accomplish this, plus a word on when it’s time to bring the phone in to our specialists for an inspection and potential repairs.

Turn It Off

First and foremost, especially for older phones, the immediate step you should take after any water exposure is to turn the phone off. This is the case even if it appears your phone is still functioning just fine – this might not continue to be the case if you leave the phone on.

This is because if you don’t do anything to stop it, the damage might be permanent. Water may not be eating at the metals in your phone yet, but it will start doing so soon if the phone is moved around. The first step is to power it down and move forward from there.

Remove Battery

Next you should remove the battery, which is much easier for Samsung phones than for iPhones, but can still be accomplished in the latter case. Water may impact the battery particularly, so this is important. If you are unsure how to remove your battery, feel free to bring it to our team for help.

Drying

Once the battery is out, along with any cards or chips you also remove, try to dry these out the best you can. Use paper towels or tissues for small areas, plus shake the water out of various pieces.

After this, we recommend leaving the components out to dry for at least a few hours, or maybe longer. This will largely depend on the extend of the water exposure.

Turn On and Charge

Once you’re confident the components have all dried completely, put the phone back together and turn it on. If it won’t turn on right away, it may need to be charged first. If the phone still will not turn on after you’ve plugged it in and tried multiple times, this is a sign that damage is more significant and requires attention from our phone repair specialists.
